It is human nature to be on a constant quest to find the perfect solution for our skin care needs. We look at product after product, review after review, hoping to find something that will work for us. We know that external factors like weather or diet affect our skin, but we often forget that internal factors affect it just as much. The main culprit? Our hormones.
Your body has a variety of different hormones that are triggered by different factors. You may be surprised at how your relationship is affecting your skin.
Oxytocin is commonly referred to as the “love hormone.” It is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the hypothalamus. This hormone mainly helps with labor in women, causing contractions of the uterus and lactation. In men, it increases testosterone and helps sperm travel. The Society of Human Endocrinology has said, “In the brain, oxytocin acts as a chemical messenger and has an important role in many human behaviours including sexual arousal, recognition, trust, romantic attachment and mother–infant bonding.”
People gain high levels of oxytocin from more than just childbirth, however.
Love and Skincare
Nothing feels better than entering a new relationship and having that “honeymoon phase.” It may be common during this time for people to say you are almost glowing. This is not an exaggeration. A new romantic relationship can lead to an increase in oxytocin levels. Studies have found that oxytocin can help combat stress and anxiety, two main causations of skin flare ups.
So while it may seem far fetched, being in love is beneficial to your skin.
Adrenaline and Skincare
Before a date, you may be feeling nervous but giddy all at once. This results in an adrenaline rush, similar to if you were exercising. New York City dermatologist Elyse M. Love, M.D. has said that this rush of adrenaline is like a “micro-internal cleanse” for your face. There is an increase in blood flow, which, in turn, increases oxygen delivery to your skin. What this does is get rid of waste products in skin cells. Remember that next time you feel an embarrassed blush in your face.
Being in love is not only exciting, but also beneficial to your health. It can refresh your skin and give an added boost to your current skincare routine. But it is important to remember that self-love is just as important as a relationship. So don’t fret if you are currently single or just got out of a relationship. Being single is valid and allows you to spend time loving yourself. Loving and taking care of yourself can also help with oxytocin production, so spend a little extra time hyping yourself up in the mirror or saying some affirmations.
Whether single or in a relationship, love is a key factor for your skin’s health. Love is the one skincare product that is beneficial to everyone, regardless of your skin type and needs.
